My Story

My name is Mary and I am 65 years old. I was 55 when I had the first symptoms of a brain tumour - periodic pins and needles and numbness in 2 fingers of my right hand. When I was referred to a neurologist, he organised several tests until the tumour was diagnosed.
I went to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for the operation. Three hours following that, I developed a blood clot which led to a stroke.
I spent a week in ICU and was then moved to the Delancey Hospital for three months. Twice daily I had physio and speech therapy. It was very hard work but eventually I was able to walk with a stick and talk, but with aphasia. My sister came to live with me for 4 and a half months until I could do things independently.
Now, although I am still paralysed down the right side, I can drive my adapted car, write (badly!) with my left hand, walk short distances without a stick, and use a computer, albeit slowly. I have a wide circle of friends and, if needed, we support each other when we need something.
Life has not come to an end!!!
